Civil War re-enactors have a blast with guns holstered

Deseret News (Salt Lake City), May 30, 2010 by Marc Haddock Deseret News

FAIRFIELD, Utah County — Past and present collided Saturday morning when a scheduled live artillery shoot with Civil War-period artillery was canceled because the modern-day Army had booked the shooting range.

Other than that, Camp Floyd/Stagecoach Inn State Park’s annual Civil War Encampment went off without a hitch, as re-enactors dressed in blue or gray uniforms, set up period camp tents, cooked over open fires and gave visitors a taste of life in the 1860s.

The encampment will continue 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday.

Stan Wheeler, of Jensen, and several other family members brought a cannon they had built to Civil War specifications — a six- pounder — to try out at firing range. When the real soldiers turned them away, the Wheelers took their cannon to the Camp Floyd Cemetery.

“We fired one cannon shot, then we shot a blank, then we came here and shot the bull for the rest of the day,” said Wheeler, dressed in a blue uniform and sitting in a camp chair in front of the white tent where he had spent the previous night.

Three other members of the Wheeler family, also dressed in blue uniforms, sat around a charcoal fire in a brazier in front of the tent. Inside the brazier was a Dutch oven filled with cherry cobbler.

John Cornell, of West Jordan, said he was attracted to the Civil War era because it teaches lessons that are still meaningful.

“This gives us more respect for what our forefathers did,” Cornell said.

In addition to men dressed in familiar uniforms are dozens of women in large hoop skirts, and a barber’s tent where one can get a shave with a straight razor.

Youngsters try on the child-size uniforms used for Boy Scout groups and are taught to drill with replica toy rifles. They also get to play a variety of Civil War-era games.

It’s all designed to capture the three-year period from 1858 to 1861, when Camp Floyd housed the largest concentration of U.S. troops in the United States.

Saturday’s encampment events culminated in the Fairfield School, where members of the Camp Floyd Historic Masonic Lodge were planning to put on a Master Mason degree in period costume.

Loyd Davis, last year’s Utah Grand Master who welcomed visitors to the park in period formal dress, said Fairfield was the site of the first Masonic lodge in Utah.

This helps to educate and raise awareness

This helps to educate and raise awareness of people in my world to understand why it ?appears? that I do alright, when in fact I am just more aware of my surroundings that the average hearing person.

I am often surprised when people tell me that ?gee, I didn?t realize that your hearing was so poor, you do so well?. My reply is that I am not trying to hide the fact that I have a hearing loss, it?s just not a label that I am comfortable with. I would rather that people get to know me first, as an outgoing person, good sense of humour, kind-hearted, entrepreneur, etc. who just happens to be hard of hearing.

Too many times, I tell people that I am hard of hearing and they are ?frozen? and they start speaking very loudly and over-enunciating their words to me when before they ?knew? they spoke to me normally.

The bungalow that we reside in at Khar is an almost 100 year old ancestral house of my husband Deepak’s family, which we renovated almost 10 years ago. As I was always interested in interiors, I took up the challenge of redesigning and renovating it myself without the help of any interior designer.

Starting off

A well planned home was what I was aiming for so I drew up a plan of the flat on an inch scale and then set about redesigning the entire house. I personally shopped for all materials; granite, marble, tiles and all other fixtures. It was a tough task but the end result was worth it and I must add I enjoyed the entire process.

Location logic

I converted the old master bedroom room, which was located facing the road and hence was a little noisy for a bedroom, into a dining room-cum-kitchen. The original kitchen was located towards the back of the house. Since the kitchen was tucked away in a corner of the house, answering the doorbell while cooking was very inconvenient. So the decision made sense from that perspective as well.

What’s cooking?

I have always loved the idea of an open plan kitchen where one can interact with family and friends while cooking. In fact, very often when friends visit, they join me while I’m getting the food ready and we end up chatting here. As all the other rooms are predominately white, I added some colour to the dining area by myself painting a feature wall a deep yellow for a warm look.

Rebuilt to suit

Since the original kitchen’s location was much quieter, I decided to make it the master bedroom, with the children’s bedroom adjacent to it. I put up blinds on the windows of the kids room so that they could have fresh sunlight and also shut it out while studying

Fast flowing river is on course to fund new homes build

HOUSING chiefs want to harness the energy of one of Scotland’s fastest flowing rivers to fund more affordable homes

Cordale Housing Assocation is also carrying out a feasibility study, with Glasgow Caledonian University, to look at the potential to harness the water hydro capacity of the River Leven, which was once used to power the textile mill at Dalquhurn Estate.

In the nineteenth century the mill was one of the most important in the world, employing thousands and exporting red cloth to every corner of the globe.

If the renewable energy plan is approved, the housing assocation will sell back to the national grid any energy generated and the revenue will be used to fund more homes. The project, which will create around 100 jobs, involves raising the 30 acre site to alleviate flood risk, constructing two bridges and the re- introduction of a former mill lade or canal to harness the river’s energy.

Work has begun on the first phase to build 111 homes for rent and 18 shared equity properties and is expected to be completed by March 2012.

Housing chiefs believe the project will transform Renton into one of the most desirable places to live in West Dunbartonshire and it is hoped more homes will be built as market conditions improve.

Stephen Gibson, of Cordale Housing Association, said: “The River Leven was once the second fastest flowing river in Scotland.

“As a housing assocation we are interested in renewable energy.

“What we are hoping to do is to sell the energy to the national grid and the money we get will be used to generate income to build more affordable homes.

“It has not been done by any housing association in Scotland before now.”

Alex Neil, Minister for Housing and Communities, visited the site earlier this week to assess progress on the project, which received a pound(s)20m funding package from the Scottish Government.

He said: “Renton provides an excellent model for the 10 other areas now identified as key regeneration priorities by West Dunbartonshire.

“We will continue to work closely with the local council, housing associations and many other partners to bring these projects to fruition.”

10 Reasons Why You Should Upgrade Your Mattress Now

10 Reasons Why You Should Upgrade Your Mattress Now by Michelle Love
in Home / Home Accessories (submitted 2010-07-12)

As a consumer, you pride yourself on keeping your life up to date. You try to embrace new technologies and stay up with what’s going on in the world. If your computer isn’t the getting the job done, you upgrade it. Same with your television. And your automobile. And even your home.

So when was the last time that you upgraded your mattress?

There’s really no excuse for waiting any longer. Here are ten reasons why you should upgrade your mattress now.

1.It’s over a decade old. Mattress manufacturers generally recommend that you buy a new mattress every ten years or so. That’s because many of them are not designed to maintain maximum quality and comfort after that period of time.

2.You see rips or tears in it. Even normal use of a mattress can result in soft spots, rips, or protruding springs. Be sure to look at the underside of the mattress for splits or slits in the fabric as well.

3.You’re worried about allergies. Another big reason to upgrade is because old mattresses are breeding grounds for allergens, dust mites, and germs – all of which can have an adverse affect on your health. Think about it. You’ve undoubtedly washed your blankets, sheets, and mattress pad many times. But how often have you actually cleaned your mattress?

4.You’re tired of tossing and turning. People move around in bed because they have trouble getting comfortable

If they don’t want any filling, don’t force it. Ask if they would like to decorate their cream cheese with olive slices or peanut butter with raisins.

Do the same as above with crackers. Great choices for crackers are Ritz, Breton, and/or Graham Crackers. Makes a Great, Healthy and Fun Snack for kids.

Have fresh juice, milk or water available to drink.

Couple rise from the ashes to wed

0 Comments | Whitestable Times, Jan 7, 2010 | by Barbara Aldiss

A New year wedding is on the cards for Toy Run biker Steve Stubbs and partner Edwina weeks after a devastating fire left them homeless.

In November the couple’s lives were shattered when their home was gutted by a cigarette fire and they struggled to pay for bed and breakfast accommodation.

But Steve, co-founder of the charity bike run from Whitstable to children’s wards in hospitals, is now back home in Railway Avenue and looking forward to the future.

He said: “I was given the keys back on Christmas Eve and it’s great to be back home. The builders have done a lovely job.

“Unfortunately Wina is still in hospital. She has a lung infection after inhaling smoke and her multiple sclerosis is bad but hopefully she’ll be out soon. We’re then planning to get married.”

Steve discovered the fire after returning from the shops. Edwina and Joe the dog were unconscious inside and had to be revived by paramedics and the fire brigade

Texas Political Candidates Discuss Donations from Trial Lawyers.

Knight Ridder/Tribune Business News, July, 2002

By Wayne Slater, The Dallas Morning News Knight Ridder/Tribune Business News

Jul. 13–AUSTIN, Texas–When Democrat John Sharp appeared recently before a business organization seeking its endorsement, he carefully distanced himself from one set of political contributors – trial lawyers.

Mr. Sharp, running again for lieutenant governor, denounced Republican opponent David Dewhurst for labeling him a major beneficiary of personal-injury attorneys, who are a key source of campaign cash for Democrats.

“Six percent of my money in the last race was from trial lawyers,” Mr. Sharp said.

A new review of contributions in the 1998 lieutenant governor’s race indicates that Mr. Sharp actually got twice that much
